I'm coming to the end of my second year of study on the Broadcast Journalism course at Staffordshire University. The course combines my love of writing with my love of talking and communicating, and offers the chance to be a little creative- it's as if it was tailor made for me! I like to think I'm a fairly diverse type of girl, so I'm open minded about my future career paths- but that's no to say I'm not highly motivated.
In ten years time I'd like to think you'd be able to watch me on BBC Breakfast, but wouldn't be kicking up a fuss if it was Blue Peter or T4- or even if I was a freelance writer or a features editor.
Helen Boaden, Director General of the BBC, says she never had a plan, and she seems to have done rather well out of it- so who's to say I need to plan my future right here right now, aye?!
This page is going to showcase some of my written work, as well as some of my radio and TV news packages.
If you like what you see, hear or read, please be aware that I work as a freelance, and don't hesitate to drop me a line at kindagroovy@hotmail.co.uk.
But first, let's look at some classic News stuff ups- which with any luck, I'll avoid being part of in the industry!
Probably one of the most famous of recent years...
In 2004 the Daily Mirror ran a story alongside a fake picture, which appeared to show UK troops, of the Queen's Lancashire regiment, abusing and torturing Iraqi prisoners.
Given the pictures were fake there were huge repercussions. The hoax cost editor Piers Morgan his job- but he was lucky enough to land himself with a seat on the judging panel of Britan's got Talent, and then went galivanting off to the US!
You got out of that one relatively unscathed My Morgan-Congrats, you swine!
Whilst plucky Piers, may have bagged himself an editorial position at the Mirror despite having 'never edited a paper bag before' I don't assume to be so lucky. So, I do my best to ensure future employability. Apparently my 100 words per minute, NCTJ Teeline shorthand certificate will help. Here's hoping! It was about this time last year I was desperately trying for the 100. A year on, I'm still annoyed that my certificate would say '100%accuracy' if I hadn't have made my one measly error. *sigh*
Currently on the look out for work experience placements. Because I'm so open minded about where about I'd like to end up in the Media industry, I'm pretty much willing to give anything journalism related, a bash. Will keep you posted on my successful applications, and later on how it goes. If any of you have any suggestions on places/companies/people you feel could be influential, or have any useful industry links, you know how to get in touch. Drop a line to kindagroovy@hotmail.co.uk. Hopefully you've learned from my 'Week in the Life of a: Workaholic' that I'm quite the grafter!
