Post-Challenge Updates...

You may presume that once my 'week in the life of (example)' is over, I move onto my next challenge, not having taken an awful lot away with me. Well, you'd be wrong. Each and every challenge has been so unique and I always find myself look back at them in hindsight, or something will occur that reminds me of something I learnt as a result of the challenge.

17/05/2011 Country Dweller: Radio 1's Big Weekend in Carlisle

For the first time in a long time, I actually feel like being a country dweller, living in the rural county of Cumbria, has paid off. According to the Big Weekend website, tickets were allocated randomly, based on postcode, but weighted in favour of those living in Carlisle, Cumbria and the surrounding areas. Two thirds (65%) of the tickets went to listeners in Carlisle and Cumbria, 30% went to neighbouring parts of North East of England and the south of Scotland, and only 5% were distributed across the rest of the UK.

Luckily I managed to get tickets for both Saturday and Sunday. Hung around in the Main Stage tent mainly, so was privileged to see these artists live.

I urge everyone to check out Lady Gaga's performance. It's a MUST see. Crazy, crazy woman in my opinion- but seriously, HOW fantastic is this?!

12/05/2011 Workaholic: Night shifts.

I'll tell you what's new on the 'Workaholic' front- night shifts. I'm told so often at Uni that it really helps to succeed in life if you make the most of opportunities and have a real 'can do' attitude. I seem to have taken this to the extreme  and never turn down a shift these days, regardless of whether the result is a 70 hour working week, or a severe lack of sleep. I worked two night shifts last week, so found myself starting work at 11pm and finishing at 7.30 am. It's not the first time I've done one, but it is the first time I've done two consecutive nights, and the first time I've worked with that particular permanent 'nighter'. With only the two of you on the shift, it helps time fly by if you can have a bit of a laugh with your colleague. In our case it's safe to say the colleague bonding could've gone better. I vowed that my happy disposition would rub off on her by the end of the second shift. No such luck. (The woman blatantly doesn't see enough sunshine!)

So anyway, not my favourite ever 17 hours in work but for a real glutton for punishment, like myself, they have simply become a new challenge. Pity I wasn't put on the rota to do a week's worth- otherwise I could have  documented them as a new 'A week in the Life of...' challenge! Shame.

19/04/2011 A pessimist: Shop Horror, STILL!

You may remember having read this post. As part of my week in the life of a pessimist I wrote about the downsides of online shopping. Now, those particular purchases were especially annoying as, still, the website has not processed my refund. Nor have they confirmed they have received my returned item package. How does it possibly take that long? I've sent them an email and they're yet to get back to me. There's not even a number listed to enable you to speak to someone on the phone. I'm not lovin' their customer service at the moment, it has to be said. If I have to go through Trading Standards, or some other official body to get my money back- I will. Nobody puts this many hours in at work, to see themselves scammed outta £80!

29/03/2011 A Fad-Dieter: Looks like I had it Easy!

Just heard about this diet, The Maple Syrup diet. I chose this video to help explain it to you, as it seems this girl did it for reasons similar to mine.

Makes the Cabbage Soup diet seem a doddle ey?!

12/03/2011 An Enivronmentalist: Energy Saving

Stayed with a friend recently who's at Manchester University, and lives in student halls. She has this little notice under her light switch in her room. (Left.)

Although it may seem simple in principle, and you may think it may not make much of a difference, it has the potential to make students stop and think about their energy usage. Given bills are all inclusive in the rent of student halls, most residents probably don't think twice about leaving their laptops running all day, or keeping the heating low when they're not in.

Perhaps they will start attempting to save energy when they're paying the bill, but until then, the earth is suffering. In my halls, we didn't have these type of notices, (or at least there wasn't one in my room!) Next year I've been granted the position of being a student warden, and will be living in halls again with the freshers. As part of my role I have to liase at least every two weeks with the accomodation officers- promoting effective energy use is definately something I'll suggest they can improve on.
